A unique exhibit -- ELLAS: Contemporary Women Artists in Cuba --opens today at the Havana Gallery on the North Side.

The Havana Gallery is the only one in the Midwest that features art brought directly from Cuba. Since the gallery opened in 1999, the staff has traveled to Cuba several times a year in search of the island's most successful and influential contemporary artists.

The exhibit features work by six of the gallery's most popular female artists. Among them is Tania Chang, a young artist of Chinese-Cuban origin whose work uses the elements of nature and the seasons to create sensual portraits.

Work by Alicia de la Campa also is included. The artist paints what she knows best -- herself. Each canvas contains metaphorical messages about her life in relation to the human condition with a particularly Cuban point of view. Another participant is self-taught artist Sandra Dooley, who began painting in her early 30s. Dooley paints her reflections on everyday life, transforming the mundane into something beautiful.

Other featured artists are Alicia Leal, Isolina Limonta and Julieta Martinez.

An opening reception runs from 6-10 tonight. The show runs through June 3. Havana Gallery is at 1139 W. Webster. Call (773) 549-2492 or visit the Web site www.havanagallery.com.
